A New Chapter for Kumon in Cardiff

New instructor Shailja Tewary is bringing Kumon’s individualised approach to learning for families in Cyncoed and Whitchurch.
For Cardiff parents looking to give their children a little extra confidence in maths and English, there’s a new face to get to know. Shailja Tewary has taken the reins at the Kumon Cardiff Cyncoed Study Centre and, this term, is extending the programme to families in Whitchurch too.
From finance to education
With a professional background in finance and experience tutoring children privately, Shailja brings an unusual combination of analytical thinking and a genuine passion for helping young people flourish.
It was through tutoring that she discovered how rewarding it could be to watch a child make progress at their own pace not simply improving academically, but becoming more confident and independent along the way. That experience ultimately inspired her to make education a greater focus of her career.
“What drew me to Kumon is how individualised it is — no two children follow the same path,” says Shailja. “Every worksheet and every stage of progress is built around that individual child, rather than a classroom average.
“I’m really looking forward to working with local families and supporting their children’s learning and development. I’ve seen first-hand how much confidence children can gain when they realise what they’re capable of achieving.”
Learning at their own pace
At the heart of the Kumon Method is the idea that children learn best when work is matched to their individual ability.
Rather than beginning according to age or school year, each child starts at a level that allows them to build a strong foundation before progressing gradually to more challenging work. Short, structured daily study is designed to help children develop their maths and English skills step by step.
Building confidence beyond the classroom
For Shailja, however, the benefits extend beyond the subjects themselves. The aim is also to nurture concentration, confidence and independent learning — skills children can carry with them both inside and outside the classroom.
Two Cardiff communities, one individualised approach
With two study centres now available in Cardiff, local families have more choice over where to attend.
The Cardiff Cyncoed Study Centre meets at Cyncoed Methodist Church, Westminster Crescent, Cardiff CF23 6SE.
The Cardiff Whitchurch Study Centre meets at St Teilo’s Church, Old Church Road, Cardiff CF14 1AD.
Both centres welcome children
