The Commonwealth Games-inspired Open Weekend gives people of all ages the chance to try a wide range of sports and fitness activities completely free of charge. The event is open to both members and non-members, making it the perfect opportunity for families, friends and individuals to experience everything their local leisure centres have to offer.

The programme includes adult and junior gym sessions at Eastern Leisure Centre; swimming, basketball, pickleball and badminton at Fairwater and Llanishen; cycling on the outdoor velodrome at Maindy and adult and junior gym tasters at Penylan Library and Community Centre.

Ann Hillman, GLL Community Sport and Health Manager for Cardiff, said:

"We're delighted to be celebrating the 2026 Commonwealth Games by giving local people the chance to try something new for free. Whether you've always wanted to learn a new sport, get back into exercise or simply enjoy an active day out with family and friends, there's something for everyone across the weekend. We hope as many local residents as possible will come along, have a go and discover what's available at their local Better leisure centre."

All activities are free, although some sessions must be booked in advance due to limited spaces.

Residents can find the full programme of activities and book their place by visiting their local Better leisure centre or the Better website.

Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the charitable social enterprise and workers’ cooperative that runs leisure facilities in Cardiff on behalf of the city council.
